One of the first self-help books I read was Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers. One of the ideas it contained that stuck with me is that of the Grid of Life.
The Grid of Life
What I recall is that Susan recommends making sure each of your nine squares is filled, so that if something seemingly catastrophic happens in one aspect of your life, you’ll survive. Whatever is contained in the remaining eight squares will help to pull you through, until you’re able to rebuild the final ninth.
This is how I’d fill in my Grid of Life now.
At the time I read Feel the Fear, I was right at the start of my journey of self-exploration. I wouldn’t have been able to include Aiyana, writing, or gardening; my life grid would have looked a little empty. Now it’s jam-packed. I don’t have space for something I consider to be quite a big part of my life – spirituality. I would also love to one day include sewing, and maybe learning to speak French. I guess if I have more children they’ll need to share a square…
I think the grid being confined to nine squares is to emphasise that there is only so much we can give our full attention to at one time.
What does your Grid of Life look like?
